Jesus and the Scrolls: The Jewish Roots of the Church
Director: Dr. John Bergsma, Ph.D.
Date: Thursday, November 8, 2018
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Location: St. John Paul II Seminary (145 Taylor Street NE, Washington, DC 20017)
The day will include refreshments, lunch, and presentations on the Dead Sea Scrolls by Dr. John Bergsma.
The Dead Sea Scrolls have been called the greatest archeological discovery of the twentieth century, yet few Catholics understand their relevance to the early Church and the Catholic faith, and most scholars of the scrolls have little interest in pointing out the many lines of connection. Yet the Jewish monastic community that left us the scrolls exhibited profound similarities in thought, practice, and worship with the early Christians. The Scrolls help us recognize the Jewish roots of Jesus’ teaching and many Christian practices and doctrines that are commonly considered late or even medieval innovations.
